Being a versatile artist has its challenges. After finally touring internationally I understand that I’m truly an International artist because America, only responds to things that they are use to seeing or at least what they want to see. I’m historically a Soulful singer, however I’ve grown and branded myself as a Pop Artist (which is truly authentic to me) and a big part of that is my being simply different from other black male singers. I’m in LA and it’s like I have to really do research on where I’m performing at because I can easily fit in with a Pop/Edm or Rock crowd and also easily fall in with the R&B Churchy crowd. Sometimes my art wants to present itself in a “Ed Sheeran-ish” way and just sing with my guitar and other times the art wants to go straight “Lenny Kravitz” on me, sometimes I’m feeling straight “Tank-ish” and just wanna scream and show all my vocal or sometimes I wanna give em “GAGA” with all my latex and all the dramatics and others I just wanna be “Fetty Wapping” and sing rap to trap lol. Most artist don’t have this many sides to them that they can deliver authentically, I do, but at times it’s hard cus Americans and Black people only want to hear what they are use to hearing. Im sure this versatility will work out for me in the long run, but anyways. In November Jamai revealed to the public he would be traveling to china to perform. He did a 2 month club residency in Shanghai, China doing 75 shows. Just a few weeks ago he returned to the states to record more of his album in Los Angelos. It appears that there were lots of people waiting his arrival in the states too. Instagram was flooded with star studded photo ops with him and some of hollywoods premiered like Jamie Foxx, Tank, Lalah Hathaway, Brian Mcknight and so many more. On Friday January 15th, 2016 Jamai performed at one of LAs hottest spots, The XEN LOUNGE, owned by Singer/Actress Tisha Campbell-Martin. Jamai auditioned for Philly Idol on July 30th, only to be picked in the top 3 of over 1000 other hopefuls who also auditioned, but wasn’t quite as good and The Unhuman Entertainer. hA! Jamai then along with 2 other contestants in the top three performed Live on the show. Jamai wowed the studio audience and obviously the judges. Leon Huff, one half of the Legendary Songwriter/Production Duo GAMBLE & HUFF who has produced everyone from Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle, Teddy Pendergrass and more was quoted “Voice quality! Style, Personality, Appearance…And That Guitar!” When asked about why he picked Jamai to be a finalist. Other Judges included Dj Cosmic Kev, Of Philadelphia Hip Hop Station Power 99, and Radio Personality Patty Jackson of Philadelphia Oldies Station WDAS, whom all were impressed by Jamai.
Sources say that Jamai has been teaching himself the guitar for a while but has waited to present his talent to the world. It is unclear how long he has been learning this gift of guitar. Hopefully we will see more of him and his guitar soon. On Tuesday he performed an acoustic version of Super Bowl Half Time Performer- Katy Perry; Wide Awake, and as Jamai always does…made it his own. On Thursday morning (4/17/15) Jamai took to instagram and opened up in the caption of this picture about how his red hair(and the attention is caused) made and still makes him insecure stating:
“When I decided to brand myself as an artist with #RedHair I understood that it would make me memorable when I wanted to be seen and when I didn’t want to. The perfect training for paparazzi following you, people recognizing you when you don’t want to be recognized or not looking UP TO PAR as a celebrity. My fear said…WHO ROCKS RED HAIR? That’s corny, that’s crazy, too flamboyant, just drawling. Then I realized that it would be ultimately me really embracing who I am as an indiviual/artist. Ppl look at me crazy everywhere I go. AS LONG AS THEY HAVE AN OPINION (gd or bd) is all I care about. If you have an opinion, this mean YOU REMEMBER and I made an impression!
